City history

Almost 300 objects are registered in the historic building list of Leverkusen. A large part are buildings originating from the pre industrial age. At some places you assume you are in a village or a small town: In Hitdorf narrow-chested fishing houses cling together at the banks of the river Rhine, in Rheindorf around the Aldegundis church a few medieval buildings are maintained and the Burscheider street in Bergisch-Neukirchen is surrounded by timber framed houses. Also the Baroque castle Morsbroich originates from the Feudal ages.

Yet also signs of the early industrial age are now registered as historical buildings, the former factory for scythes Kuhlmann or the industrialists residence Wuppermann. Even a landscape designed jewel is part of the industrialisation of Leverkusen: In 1912 Dr. Carl Diusberg created the Japanese Garden, a graceful part of Asia with ponds and red lacquered Toriis in close vicinity of the Bayer factory.

At the end of August 2005 the book about the city's history was published, which was ordered by the council of the city for the anniversary year 2005 of Leverkusen. A team of eleven proven specialists in the regional history explored in conjunction with the city archive the history of the city area of Leverkusen for many years. The period comprised the times from the early human settlements to the present. The result, the first scientifically based history of the complete city, is now available.

As a city Leverkusen is comparatively young; the citizens of the former independent communities were linked to each other due to political, economic and social relationships, long before the city of Leverkusen existed. In nine well written chapters the authors described commonalities and differences of the parts and also the way, which was not an easy one, becoming the big city of Leverkusen. The richly pictured and well designed book has been published by the publisher for regional history and is available in all book shops in Leverkusen. It invites the reader to (newly) discover the history of this city.
